Nature
The Lappajärvi lake was born 73 million years ago when a meteorite collided with Earth. This meteorite, which measured nearly a kilometre in diameter, created a crater where the lake later formed. As a result of the impact, several rock types were formed, kärnäite (impact melt-rock) and suevite being the most well known.
The modern-day Lappajärvi is an energetic tourism and summer cottage area, a municipality offering cultural and sporting activities. The region has several museums, art exhibitions, and events.
Meteorite Trail and Surrounding Areas
A nature trail of 1.5 km leads the visitor around Nykälänniemi point, next to the spa. The trail was named the Meteorite Trail because of the violent impact. Signposts are provided at various points along the trail, providing the visitors with instructions on what to do at the exercise points. The signs share further information on the meteorite and the lake.
